Description
As a record spins, the momentum of the stylus as it moves along the grooves naturally causes the phono cartridge to be pulled toward the spindle. The anti-skating mechanism built into the tonearm works to counteract this force, ensuring that the stylus stays properly aligned within the groove. Proper anti-skating application is crucial for:
- Enabling the stylus to trace the grooves accurately, providing balanced sound reproduction without a bias toward the left or right channel.
- Reducing wear on the inner walls of the record grooves, preserving both the vinyl and the stylus.
How to Adjust Anti-Skating Force:
Anti-skating should only be adjusted once the cartridge alignment and tracking force have been correctly set. During the alignment process, set the anti-skating force to zero.
-
Begin by setting the anti-skating to the first notch.
-
Choose a stereo LP that you are familiar with. Place the record on the platter and start the turntable.
-
Play the LP and listen carefully. If the anti-skating force is too low, you will notice that the left channel overpowers the right, with more volume and detail.
-
Gradually increase the anti-skating force by moving to the next notch. Continue listening and repeating this step until both the left and right channels sound equally balanced, open, and dynamic.
-
You will know you’ve reached the correct setting once the sound quality begins to degrade, indicating that the anti-skating force has been set too high. When this happens, simply lower the anti-skating force to the previous notch to achieve optimal performance.
